Spencer County History

Spencer County, in west central Kentucky, was created in 1824 from parts of Nelson, Shelby, and Bullitt counties. The county was named for Spear Spencer, a captain in the “Cornstalk Militia” in the early 1800s, which used cornstalks for drill because of a shortage or rifles. Spencer was killed in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.

During the Civil War, the courthouse was burned by guerrillas in January 1865. The records were saved.

In May 1865, notorious guerrilla William Quantrill was captured and mortally wounded near Wakefield. A historical marker is located on KY 55, 5 miles south of Taylorsville.

Taylorsville Lake was impounded on Salt River in 1982.

Taylorsville

Taylorsville was named in honor of Virginia native Richard Taylor, who donated sixty acres of land in 1799 for a town at the junction of Brashear’s Creek and Salt River. The town was named as the county seat in 1824.

Historic Sites

Vaucluse,” near the junction of KY 155 and Yoder Station Road, was established by Jacob Yoder about 1806 and known as “Beechland” until his death. Yoder, Revolutionary War soldier, left Fort Redstone in Pennsylvania in 1782, on the first flatboat to descend the Mississippi River.

The Spencer House, on Main Street in Taylorsville, was a famous hotel and tavern on the Louisville to Taylorsville stage route. Built about 183 by Frederick B. Mathis, the 20-room brick structure was later owned by Isaiah Yocum, Confederate veteran.
