The Society
The purposes of the Spencer County
Historical and Genealogical Society are: the preservation of historic sites;
the collection, preservation, and perpetuation of genealogical history relative
to
Examples of projects of the Society
are sponsorship of an annual essay contest for local high school students; the
design and construction of the Heritage Quilts (1824-1924) for Kentucky’s
Bicentennial celebration in 1992, using hand stitching by local artisans,
displayed at the Spencer County Fiscal Court meeting room; promotion of the
preservation and restoration of the Ashes Creek School and the heritage
homestead known locally as the Yates House, both located at Taylorsville Lake
State Park; and sponsorship of a Kentucky Highway Marker honoring James
Morrison Heady.
The Society also encourages its
members to publish their research projects, thereby facilitating the research
of others.
