Trim [1996-99]

Trim was a fun band to be in. Everyone who was ever in the band had some combination of mental problems or substance problems or zero self-esteem. The band periodically ceased to exist, only to rise again in some different configuration.

The foundation was: Sue Bailey/bass & vocals -- Debby Barber/drums -- Khriss Urban/keyboard, vocals, odd instruments. I was brought in to play guitar because their main criteria for a guitarist was that it be someone they liked--I wasn't a guitarist, knew only a handful of basic chords, and didn't even own an instrument. I went out and bought a guitar, but never made the concession to pay out for an amp. This line-up called itself "Fur Fur" and never got beyond rehearsals and basement party jams.

The next line-up (renamed Trim) brought in Brett Holsclaw on lead guitar, Dean Beatty on drums; I started writing some of the songs and having to sing them. There was over a year of heavy local shows under this configuration, then it fell apart again.

The final incarnation of Trim saw Brett taking over the drums, adding James Turner on guitar. This version played out a lot and eventually recorded an album's worth of material at the Rocket House with Jon Cook behind the wheel.

The reason I stayed through all the upheaval and drama and lousy drunken shows was that when things clicked, Trim kicked out the fucking jams. Though it unfortunately remains unmixed, the Trim reel is verification and made it all worthwhile.
