Baby's Smiley Toy

Materials:

Surface Slip Stitch - From the front of the worked crochet fabric, pull up a loop around the post of an exiting stitch, pull that loop thru the loop on the hook.

Back - Make a flat circular disk for a total of 8 rounds.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join rows, mark beginning stitch with a safty pin or piece of contrasting yarn
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around
Rnd 3: (1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around
Rnd 4: (1 sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st) around
Rnd 5: (1 sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next st) around
Rnd 6: (1 sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in next st) around
Rnd 7: (1 sc in next 5 st, 2 sc in next st) around
Rnd 8: (1 sc in next 6 st, 2 sc in next st) around, fasten off

Front - Make another flat circular disk for a total of 8 rounds, but do not fasten off.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join rows, mark beginning stitch with a safty pin or piece of contrasting yarn
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around
Rnd 3: (1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around
Rnd 4: (1 sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st) around
Rnd 5: (1 sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next st) around
Rnd 6: (1 sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in next st) around
Rnd 7: (1 sc in next 5 st, 2 sc in next st) around
Rnd 8: (1 sc in next 6 st, 2 sc in next st) around, DO NOT fasten off, pull thru a long loop so it doesn't accidently unravel

Face - Embroider or crochet a great big smiley face on the Front piece.

Using black yarn, surface slip stitch 14 stitchs around the posts of the stitches between rounds 5 and 6 for the smile. Leave a long tail at both ends to embroider the dimples.
Surface slip stitch 2 stitches diagonally up and outwards over rows 4 and 5 for the eyes.

Edging and "Handles"

Start right where you left off at the end of Rnd 8 of the Front.
Hold the Front and Back together and crochet thru both pieces.
Rnd 1: (1 sc in next 7 st, 2 sc in next st) most of the way around, stuff the toy, then continue the rest of the way around.
Rnd 2: (sc in next 2 st, ch 10, skip 7 st) around, join with sl st to beginning sc.
Rnd 3: 15 sc in each ch 10 space around, sl st to beginning sc, fasten off.
