Company stores of coal mining towns issued tokens,known as scrip,used by the miners.They used these tokens to buy food and supplies at the company store.The merchants often discounted the tokens to leave miners deeply in debt. This token was issued by the General Stores with headquarters in Beckley, W.Va. It was made by Osborne Register Company in Cincinnati,probably in the middle of the 19th century.
