December 2001 Hike Log
- Otter Creek Park, 2 Dec.:
A total of 27 people and 3 dogs participated in hikes this cool day.
After following the red and yellow trails to where the blue trail
(the Otter Creek Trail) splits off, one group stayed on the yellow
trail for about a 4-mile loop,
while most of the hikers climbed down the rocky
hill to continue on the blue trail, then followed it around for a
moderate 8-mile hike.
Many went to the Doe Run Inn in nearby Brandenburg after hiking.
- Harrison-Crawford S.F., 9 Dec.:
At our semimonthly planning meeting before the hike, participants
planned out the hikes for January and February.
Then, on this cold but sunny day, 25 people showed up or stayed for the hike.
They hiked a combination of part of the Adventure Hiking Trail and
shorter trails for a total of about 6 miles of moderate hiking.
Several ate at the familiar Overlook Restaurant in Leavenworth.
- Bernheim Forest, 16 Dec.:
About 13 people hiked in the rain on various trails
totalling about 5 miles, fording a stream near the end.
- Holiday party, 16 Dec.:
About 42 people (including those who had to dry off first) gathered
at Barbara's home for great food,
conversation, carol singing and our entertaining gift exchange game.
- Vernon-Douglas Nature Preserve, 23 Dec.:
Around 9 people hiked the 3.5-mile loop trail in this nature
preserve in Hardin County.
- Knobstone Trail, 30 Dec.:
Despite temperatures initially in the 20s and a dusting
of snow on the ground, 25 people came on this trip.
Of these, 17 did a rugged hike of about 5 miles south from
the Elk Creek trailhead (1 hiker turned back) while another
7 did a shorter and easier (but still moderate)
hike north from the trailhead.
Several ate at Marianne's restaurant at the Scottsburg
exit off I-65.
