April 2001 Hike Log
- Vallis Marineris, 32 March:
Jake Maloney led 243 hikers on a spectacular 27-km trek through this
ancient Martian rift valley.
Almost all dined afterward at the Olympus Mons Café.
- Muscatatuck State Park, 1 April:
Around 20 people hiked two trails in this wetlands park.
- We had a good turnout at our hike planning meeting
before the hike on 8 April.
The hike was in the Hoosier National Forest very close to
Hemlock Cliffs (but down the road a little).
The 26 hikers bushwhacked about 5 miles through hills and valleys,
seeing a variety of rock shelters, many with small waterfalls.
The temperature was in the upper 70s (at least) with occasional
nice breezes.
Many ate ate the Overlook in Leavenworth afterward.
- Adventure Hiking Trail, 15 April:
On Easter, five people did part of the AHT in Harrison-Crawford
State Forest and saw plenty of spring flowers.
- Yellow Birch Ravine, 22 April:
The hike was absolutely breath-taking.
Several morel mushrooms were spotted.
The hikers saw lots of wildflowers, and Larry didn't disappoint
in keeping is reputation as a "boot camp" hike leader.
He took the hikers off trail several times, they went rock-climbing
on several occasions,
and were stopped by nobody less than the Crawford County Sheriff because a
landowner claimed they were tresspassing.
They didn't get in trouble;
the sheriff was real nice about it, just glad to see they weren't
minors drinking beer.
Some ate afterward at Van's Restaurant in Marengo. (AC)
- Tipsaw Lake, 29 April:
About 22 hikers followed Anne around this quiet lake in the Hoosier
National Forest, for about a 6-mile hike.
The temperature was in the low 80s, but there was enough of a breeze
to make it pleasant.
Most of the group ate at the Overlook in Leavenworth afterward.
On of the hikers wrote an article about it in her column in the
Courier Journal (Friday, 4 May, Weekend Xtra, page 2).
