January 2000 KISHAW Hike Log

After an enjoyable New Year's Day brunch at Doris's, about 15 of us went on a 4- or 5-mile hike in Cherokee Park. (A few returned to Doris's afterward.)

Fort Hill in Frankfort, 2 Jan. : About 14 people made this trip (one arriving late). The hike was short but interesting; there are remains of two earthen Civil War forts on this hill overlooking downtown Frankfort. After the hike, we visited the Kentucky History Center, a new, very well done, museum on the complete history of what is now Kentucky. We stopped to eat at the Shoney's on the way out of town. (We probably won't again.)

X, 9 Jan.: No one hiked this rainy morning (as far as I know!). We had planned to meet at 9:00 for a trip to Berea.

Starve Hollow, 16 Jan.: Thirty people(!) came for this hike on a relatively warm (~50 F) day. We did the yellow, part of the blue and the green (spillway) trail. Most of the group found a way across the creek below the spillway, while others retraced the green, completed the blue, and retraced the yellow. So some hiked about five miles, others more like seven. Several ate at Neil's Place in Sellersburg.

Knobstone Trail at Deam Lake, 23 Jan.: About a dozen people hiked in about an inch of snow, doing at least 5 miles (some more than others). The scenery was pretty, especially on a side trip to the lake. Most ate at the Cracker Barrel in Sellersburg.

Charlestown State Park, 30 Jan.: Around twenty people hiked all three snow-covered official trails. The weather was seasonable but overcast.
