November 1998 Hike Log

Knobstone Trail, 1 Nov.: The 12 hikers did a through hike from the Jackson Road trailhead to Indiana 160, leaving two cars at Jackson Rd., for about a 7 mile hike with hills at each end and a ridge in the middle. Four went to the Irish Rover's 5th anniversary party for beer and free food.

Knobstone Trail, Sat. 7 Nov.: Four people hiked, three of them doing about 7 miles out and back north from IN 160.

Red River Gorge, Sat. 7 Nov.: Six people hiked about 8 mi. to, up and back from Indian Stairway. The weather was nice and lots of people were hiking, rappeling, or just hanging out. Two more hiked separately (due to a miscommunication). Four of the six had set up camp before the hike and cooked dinner at the campsite. They had to put up with inconsiderate neighbors, a cold night, and a light, steady rain the next morning.

Red River Gorge, 8 Nov.: Four people (including two of the campers) hiked a total of about 8 miles, visiting Double Arch, Courthouse Rock, Haystack Rock and various rocky overlooks. We ate at Miguel's Pizza nearby.

Otter Creek Park, 15 Nov.: Seventeen people hiked the 8-mile Blue Trail in nice weather. We saw 3 or 4 deer at one point. Several of us (no deer) ate at Buckhead's in Okolona.

Berea College Forest, 22 Nov.: The ten hikers visited each of the overlooks from Indian Fort Mountain and its "fingers" except the West Pinnacle. (Lunch was at the East Pinnacle.) The weather was beautiful, with temperatures in the sixties. The views were spectacular, as always. We ate at Papaleno's in Berea.

Hemlock Cliffs, 29 Nov.: This ended up being a rugged, 8-mile hike for 18 of the 21 hikers (6 new) and a rugged 6+-mile hike for the other three. Larry led us to several interesting rock shelters and up a cliff or two. It was a very warm day, with a high of 70ºF. Most of us ate at the Overlook in Leavenworth.
