July 1998 Hike Log

Raven Run Nature Preserve, June 28: Around 13 of us hiked the main loop trail at this nature preserve beside the Kentucky River Palisades. We ate at Hall’s on the River.

AHT in Harrison-Crawford State Forest, Saturday, July 4: Only 3 hikers went this rainy holiday. The rain let up by the time they started and they had a decent hike.

Deam Lake, July 5: Ten people or so hiked the loop trail at this small park near Borden. After some bushwacking to find the unmarked trail near its beginning, we had an OK 4-mile hike. Most of us dined at Neil’s Place in Sellersburg.

Yellowwood State Forest, July 12: About 11 hikers made the trip up to this small forest west of Nashville, Ind. We only hiked two short trails and the dam, partly because of the heat. Some of us ate burritos at the Blue Planet in Bloomington.

Patoka Lake, July 19: Nine people (3 new) hiked this very hot and humid day. Those of us who did the full 6.5 miles were pretty tired. Of those who did about 5 miles, one got ill. This wasn’t good weather for that trail. By Totem Rock at Patoka Lake 19 July '98 (photo by Bryan Frazar)

Vernon-Douglas Nature Preserve, July 26: Twenty people (3 new) hiked this relatively mild day. There are less than 3.5 miles of official trail in this preserve near Elizabethtown. A larger number (none new) came to the pot luck swim party that evening at Carol’s. We had a good time.
