The seventh installment of Queering Sound again gathers together local, national and international artists - with a non-exclusive curatorial focus towards gay, lesbian and post-gender-identified participants - who explore alternative avenues of expression through sound, the digital arts, noise, and spoken word. The music performance space of the Warehouse complex will host both established and upcoming local talents as well as serve to introduce Washington audiences to new sounds and visions from across the globe through digital contributions.
Compact discs, recordings, and other merchandise from contributors and performers will also be available for sale.
Admission is $8.00 and available at the door.

Arthur Loves Plastic is Bev Stanton, who was born in the Bahamas and raised near Walt Disney World. She has won over a dozen Washington Area Music Awards in the Electronica category, including 2006 Electronica Recording Wammie for the album Pursuit of Happiness. Stanton has been described as a "remix master" by the Washington Post. In 2007, two Arthur Loves Plastic tracks were featured in the Geico Insurance's marketing campaign for a virtual Caveman's Crib. Her tracks have also appeared on VH1, MTV and the Discovery Channel. [ DIGITAL CONTRIBUTOR ]
BLK w/ BEAR is the audio-art pseudonym for visual artists and Queering Sound curator JS Adams. His audio performances - staged in art spaces across the Metro DC area and in NYC Tribeca arts district - include both temporal turntable installations and laptop compositions utilizing forced looping technique of altered vinyl recordings and media decay, along with manipulated voice synthesis and deconstructive turntablism. His recordings - released on Kuma-Chan [ USA ] and Trace Recordings [ UK ] - have accompanied film/video projects in NYC and London, as well as BBC programming. Selections from his Wish for a World Without Hurt collaboration with London's Rothko have been used in the Discovery's Channel's Emmy-nominated 'The Flight that Fought Back' docudrama. Fabiano Cueva is a sound artist from Quinto, Ecuador. His offering Made in U.S.A. is a satirical look at American culture and television created with María Teresa Ponce. In June, Cueva will participate in Radio Crossing, a 24-hour audio art broadcast on Radio Tandem (98.4 Bolzano). His collaboration with the Centro Experimental Oido Salvaje, Politica de Cables, encompasses a selection of art radio, documentary material, music experimentations and sound propaedeutic. Nick Lopata lives in lovely Takoma Park, Maryland. He has been creating and editing video for Blowoff, the monthly event thrown by Bob Mould and Richard Morel at Washington DC's 9:30 club. Nick has created a video set to music by Morel for this year's Queering Sound. In addition to his video work, Nick's other projects include photography, lighting design, and a local independent film, "The Saferoom." [ DIGITAL CONTRIBUTOR ]
Marc Manning is a veteran of several Philadelphia atmospheric bands, the shoegazer art rock of The Legend of Boggy Creek and the cave-core rock of Everything is Fine. His latest project Heavy Lids began as the audio to accompany a show of his abstract photographs at Disjecta gallery in Portland, Oregon. The sounds were to be the noise that Manning felt the photographs were making. Marc gets its inspirations from the audio to such David Lynch films as Eraserhead and Blue Velvet, as well as from the films and soundtracks of the Brothers Quay and Guy Madden. The instrumental track "Shakey" from his newest solo disc Air in the Trees (Tract Records, 2007) forms the basis for live collaboration/accompaniment with other Queering Sound musicians as The Shakey Orchestra. Minibloc is the meeting of two individuals and many colorful objects. Minibloc is the duo of Anne-Françoise Jacques and Nicolas Dion. Jacques studied electro-acoustic composition at the Université de Montréal. Dion is a self-taught musician and also member of the experimental trio Intercom. Minibloc came to life in 2004; one foot in electro-acoustic sound and the other in playful sonic abstraction. Since then, the duo has played in numerous festivals and events, including Mutek, Pop Montréal, MEG Montréal and TILT. Carton micro récréaton, their first full-length disc, came out on the Le Son 666 label in spring 2006. Their contribution is created by Lamathilde, whose work investigates identity through sexuality and gender using low-grade video, super 8, manipulated film footage and stop-motion animation. Her work has been shown in many galleries and international festivals, including Pink Screens - Brussels, Festival des films gais et lesbiens - Paris, London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, Mix NYC Festival, and as well as in Germany, Italy, Holland, Philippines, Canada, Slovenia, Australia and Lebanon. Over the course of three studio CD releases, Northern Machinehas established an uneasy sound which references their industrial, ambient, rock and fourth-world influences while rarely capitulating to any of them. Their meticulous approach to electronics, tape manipulation, audio treatments and other instruments employed in the studio is yielded in favor of a more raw and freeform methodology during live performance. Doug Poplin [ cello ] performs regularly in the Nation's Capital as a recitalist, chamber and orchestral musician and currently teaches at the Capital Hill Arts Workshop. He received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Minnesota and worked for two years with the Guarneri String Quartet at the University of Maryland. Doug continues to add his artistry to BLK w/ BEAR performances and recordings. [ LIVE PERFORMER ]
Renee Shaw aka VJ Poppins [ video ] is an installation and performance artist who embraces the phenomenon of synaesthesia. Drawing from archival footage, VJ Poppins manipulates video output through live, spontaneous editing. Like a DJ, she scratches through multiple layers of moving images searching for that perfect mix to create visual juxtapositions and non-linear narratives. VJ Poppins believes identity is a mix of visuals, narratives, genders, complex codes, data and race, commercial and institutional information. VJ Poppins is interested in the intersections of cultural synchronism between personal and communal narratives, identity, and experiences; performance is an attempt to synthesize a community of diverse interests and enthusiasms in this canonical and hierarchical world in which cultures are meshed. She borrows from everywhere trying to form new adjacencies, claiming new mixes, and forging new identities that are not fixed. [ LIVE PERFORMER ]
P D Sexton is a multi-instrumentalist based in Athens, Georgia. Employing guitar, bass, and laptops, he layers loops, delay and reverb to create a complex and compelling sonic web of experimental and hypnotic sounds. Taking cues from such notable artists as Seefeel, Labradford and Boards of Canada, Sexton's music is a modern and inventive take on classic blissed-out structures and ambient themes. His music serves an outlet for his identity as a queer man living with HIV, and is utilized as a therapeutic tool. [ LIVE PERFORMER ]
The politically-charged sound-art collective Ultra-red was founded in 1994 by two AIDS activists, and has expanded over the years to include activists and organizers from a variety of social movements both in Los Angeles and abroad. In the world of modern electronic music and sound art, Ultra-red distinguish themselves for their intrepid blend of political commitment and innovative sound. Rejecting both self-satisfied formalism and convenient political posturing, Ultra-red pursued a precarious but dynamic exchange between art and political organizing. Collectively, the Los Angeles-based group has produced radio broadcasts, performances, recordings, installations and pubic space occupations. Since the late 1990s, Ultra-red have featured the following four artist-activists: Elizabeth Blaney (artist, organizer, Union de Vecinos), Pablo Garcia (musician, organizer, Valley Family Technology Project), Dont Rhine (artist, AIDS activist), and Leonardo Vilchis (artist, organizer, Union de Vecinos). In 2004, Ultra-red also launched Public Record, a fair-use on-line archive for audio, text, image and video documents. We are proud to present two audio selections from the collective: Reena Katz and Robert Sember's contribution to the AIDS Uncanny project and "Break 'Dis (D2K/A15)" from the Public Record A Silence Broken compilation, which also features tracks from Soft Pink Truth and Lezzies on X. Dan Vera was born in South Texas and lived in Colorado, Washington State and Chicago before moving to DC. The Tejano Cubano Radical Faerie poet is Managing Editor of White Crane, a journal of Gay Wisdom & Culture, co-publisher of VRZHU PRESS, and founder of Brookland Area Writers & Artists. His poetry has been featured in various publications and on Pacifica Radio's nationally broadcast Peace Watch program. He lives in the Brookland neighborhood with his partner Peter and an operatic dog. [ LIVE PERFORMER ]
