Abstract
A CASE STUDY
DESCRIBING RHYTHMIC DIFFICULTIES AND UNDERSTANDING AMONG PIANO STUDENTS AGES 8
THROUGH 12
By Adrienne Fero
The purpose of this study was to identify specific rhythmic difficulties of
piano students ages 8 through 12, and to determine the teaching methods most
effective in helping students correct the rhythm errors. Fourteen students from
a single studio volunteered to participate in the study. Seven of the students
were administered the rhythm portion of the Iowa Tests of Music Literacy
Level 2 Grades 4-5-6. These students plus seven others were observed during two
of their weekly piano lessons. The results of the tests were compiled and
compared with the students' rhythm performance and the teaching methods used
during the piano lessons. The results suggest that students respond best to a
combination of aural, visual, and kinesthetic teaching methods.
